The large vehicle can be propelled to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds with one and 3.0 seconds with the other. However, the rear seat is cramped for people who are particularly tall, which is a drawback of the 8-series’ striking outward design—a complaint shared by its competitors as well. By the way, the 8-series is part of a class of superb sports sedans that also includes the S7 from Audi, the Panamera from Porsche, and the four-door GT from Mercedes-AMG, all of which provide comparable performance and style.

Exterior and Interior

Inside, the Gran Coupe is just as sumptuously furnished as the two-door 8-series coupe and convertible, but with a more subdued design. Digital gauge clusters measuring 12.3 inches in length, adjustable ambient lighting, a massive head-up display, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging are standard features across the board. Enhanced headliners, glass switchgear, and multifunctional chairs with more flexibility are available as cabin upgrades. A dead pedal in the ideal location makes for a highly comfortable driving stance.

While the view ahead is unobstructed, the vision behind is limited due to the sharply inclined fastback’s glass. Backseat passengers in a Gran Coupe will appreciate greater legroom than those in a two-door model, but they will notice less headroom as a result of the roofline’s acute slant. In comparison to the coupe version, the 8-series with four doors is the more sensible choice. We were able to get fifteen carry-on bags inside, including the back seat, compared to eleven in the coupe. Almost on par with the M8 Gran Coupe, the Alpina B8 version’s 612 horsepower come from the twin-turbo V-8; BMW claims it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. No matter which 8 you choose, you can count on a smooth ride and precise handling. The big Bimmer’s strong brakes and the engine refinement mentioned before more than compensate for its sluggish steering on twisty roads.

Those numbers decrease to 20 and 27 mpg, respectively, when all-wheel drive is included. Expected fuel economy ratings of 17 city and 25 highway mpg for the powerful M850i, which is available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The V-8-powered M850i’s 523 horsepower and rumbling sound are hard to resist, but they come at a price of an additional $15,000. The M850i differs from the 840i, which has six cylinders, in that respect.

Since the latter still has plenty of juice to get things moving quickly, we think it’s the better choice. The M Sport option, which includes a more aggressive body kit, black exterior trim, an M-specific steering wheel, and many interior modifications, is another one we’d go for. For optimal handling in corners, we also recommend the Comfort Seating option and a pair of 20-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires.
