Until last year’s matte red Lamborghini, I’ve never been the center of attention in a car. One of the most user-friendly infotainment systems currently available is included on the BMW M1. There aren’t a lot of unnecessary touches to do a task, the menus make sense, and most things are where you’d expect them to be. A responsive touchscreen, a rotary dial/touchpad located next to the gear selector, and voice instructions and hand gestures are the three primary methods of interaction.

In and of itself, the gear selector isn’t my cup of tea because it’s fussy and confusing. One other thing: it’s hard to see where you’re going when you’re driving. Driving in congested urban areas and parking garages may be nerve-wracking due to the large blind spots found everywhere.

Even though much of the noise is artificially produced, the M1 is incredibly noisy and incredibly quick in a straight line. However, with the addition of the PHEV components, the already-perfect BMW twin-turbo V8 becomes even more so.

Fuel efficiency ratings for the M1 range from 5.1 Le/100 km when powered by electricity to an impressive 17.2 L/100 km when powered by the twin-turbo V8 alone. Considering its size and function, the M1’s 11.8 L/100 km returned after 655 km of varied testing is great. I was able to charge it fully three times during my time with it. The BMW M1 has a plethora of driver assistance and advanced safety technologies, yet they have warned me of impending danger on more than one occasion. During my test, I encountered a few of sporadic issues with the M1’s safety systems. Though the sport seats are quite supportive and provide excellent comfort, those of lower stature may find it difficult to get in and out of this tall SUV due to the seats’ excessive padding. The M1’s firm suspension is the main factor influencing comfort. The ride is abrupt and unpleasant, befitting a premium car, because even in its most relaxed mode, every road crack and bump is audible and felt. For a car with so many shortcomings to feel so punishing, the M1 had a rigid suspension, huge wheels, and extremely low-profile performance tires.

As of right now, the most costly BMW is the M1. Prices for the top-tier M1 begin at an astounding $220,000 (not including options, the $2,480 destination charge, the $22,325 luxury tax, and any other applicable levies and costs). My expectations are really high for anything of this price, and that’s the problem. I’ve ridden more economical yet focused BMWs and Alpinas.
