The i5’s spacious and plush cabin is reminiscent of that of the gasoline-powered 5-series. While the battery won’t block any inside space, the 5-series has a much roomier trunk. The i5 has two leather options and a faux-leather alternative called Veganza. Selecting a set of glass-encased internal controls further elevates the experience. The M60 xDrive comes standard with heated, ventilated, and massage-equipped front seats, whereas the eDrive40 offers this feature as an optional extra.

The i5’s 12.3-inch digital gauge display and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen take up most of the dashboard real estate. The newest iDrive 8.5 interface from BMW is intuitive, customizable, and compatible with wireless updates. An in-dash navigation system, wireless phone charging, a Harman/Kardon sound system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a head-up display are all standard features on this model.

We were really impressed by the eDrive40’s refined ride and whisper-quiet engine during our testing; in fact, it seemed just like a gas-powered 5-series, even though the electric motor produced far less noise. We haven’t had the chance to test drive the xDrive40 version just yet. The i5 M60’s powerful dual-motor transmission provides thrilling acceleration, and our testing showed that the heavy sports sedan is surprisingly composed around corners.

The most fuel-efficient i5 model is the eDrive40, which gets 105 MPGe according to the EPA on the highway. The M60 xDrive, in contrast, gets a pitiful 86 MPGe on the interstate. It is claimed that by hooking up the vehicle to DC fast-charging stations, the battery pack can supposedly be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
