Two power levels are available: Base cars feature a 473-hp twin-turbo inline-six, while the competition boosts output to 523 horsepower. The competitive variants have an eight-speed automatic and optional all-wheel drive, while the base M440i has a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive.

When directed by firm and focused driver inputs, the M440i, which has a chassis designed for clipping apexes, operates at its most dynamic. However, even while driving casually, the ride might be uncomfortable. The appearance is forceful, the exhaust is rorty, and the interior is sleek. Among its main competitors are the Mercedes-AMG C63 and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing.

Even big passengers like me can settle in for the long-distance trips for which this car was designed thanks to the adjustable bolsters and the incredibly comfortable and thickly padded seats. However, a startling and embarrassing fact was discovered by the build-and-price tool on the BMW Canada website: only black or brown leather may be used with front-seat ventilation, a $900 premium. Unfortunately, that means bidding farewell to the seductive red that is a hallmark of BMWs. The optional adaptive dampers that turn the M440i into a true grand tourer were also installed on this tester. The adjustable suspension is simply amazing for its ability to absorb road irregularities while maintaining the kind of composure that makes this coupe quite playful when the road starts to wind, and even if there is an underlying firmness to the ride quality, it is by no means uncomfortable.

For its starting price of $67,430 before taxes and including freight, the M440i boasts a respectable array of basic amenities; but, some significant upgrades are required to make this a true dual-purpose GT vehicle. Engine and Performance

The engine compartment of the M440i releases a torrent of power and character when it is pushed to its limits. The 3.0L displacement and smooth straight-six engine, which generates 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque when combined with a single turbocharger, is what gives it its giddy-up. The torque figure is far higher than the last time the full-fledged M version of this car, which was still known as the M3 back in 2013, was powered by a massive V8 engine. That full-fledged M vehicle would undoubtedly win any war of physical force, but this inline-six is a wonderful engine in and of itself, with exceptional smoothness and hardly any turbo lag as all that torque comes online at just 1,800 rpm. With the throttle pedal jammed and the all-wheel drive system clawing ahead, this version of the 4 Series can reach 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, a claimed time that is undeniable based on how it slings passengers into their seatbacks.

The eight-speed automatic transmission is incredibly responsive, much like the BMW-built Toyota Supra that has the same engine. It is content to let the engine wind itself all the way to redline before snapping off yet another quick gear change, but if you only consider adding additional momentum at cruising speed, it drops a cog to increase the revs. Additionally, BMW claims that the M440i’s 48-volt mild hybrid system smoothes the auto stop/start function, which turns off the engine when stopped rather than idling needlessly, and chips in while accelerating quickly. By using its independent battery to power the vehicle’s electronic systems, the system can lessen the strain on the powertrain.

Although this version of the 4 Series is incredibly efficient, it is difficult to say how much of it directly affects fuel economy because it requires the hybrid components. Serenity was the rule of the road (this is a GT car, after all), and I only drove enthusiastically when the asphalt became twisted on the 250-kilometer test circle, which has an almost equal distribution of city, country, and highway sections. Its official highway rating is 7.7 L/100 km, which I was able to match.

Given the full day of filming in the cold and the winter tires this tester was shod in, the remaining portion of the week-long test skewed closer to its official combined figure of 9.2 L/100 km, which is still impressive. The already strong advanced safety suite that comes with every 4 Series is enhanced by that premium package. A driving aid package that incorporates automatic lane-change capabilities into the adaptive cruise control complements features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and stay assist, forward collision warning and automatic braking, and more.

Despite being only a gimmick, the feature really functions rather well, enabling the driver to smoothly transition into the next highway lane as soon as the turn signal is activated, so long as the lane is free of other cars. The adaptive cruise system effortlessly applies the throttle and brakes and blends in with the traffic flow, even though even the narrowest of the four preset distances it maintains from prior vehicles may be a bit too large, allowing other drivers to squeak in without invitation.

Additional high-end features include a self-parking system that can park in parallel or perpendicular slots, as well as a so-called backup aid that can autonomously reverse the vehicle down the same route after recording the last 50 meters of low-speed driving (below 35 km/h, according to BMW). Even the $81,475 asking price for this fully loaded version appears fair when compared to both of those competitors with comparable equipment, not to mention other models on the market like the Infiniti Q60, even though the pre-tax total could easily increase with the options shown above.

The 2027 BMW M440i feels worth the entry price for reasons other than its novelty, though that certainly doesn’t hurt. No, what makes this such a great GT car overall is the way it blends more than enough performance ability with exceptional cruising comfort and a host of opulent comforts.

This 4 Series overtook some six-figure sports cars on its way to earning a particular place in my heart, and the more time I spent behind the wheel, the more I appreciated it.
